Amina Talib was born at 4.45 on Sunday morning, a true child of Syria’s hellish revolution. Her 18-year-old mother had gone into labour two hours earlier in a flimsy, unlit tent in one of the grimmest refugee camps in the world.

She did so during a violent storm that had blown down the only clinic and turned the camp into one huge quagmire. Somehow a car was found. The driver got her to a doctor in a village two miles away. Somehow mother and child survived.

“I was terrified,” said Maryam, Amina’s mother. Ahmed Talib, the father, said: “You can only thank God that they’re alive.”

Amina is possibly the luckiest child in Syria, but in another sense she is one of the most unfortunate, condemned to spend the first months, perhaps years, of her life in an abomination of a camp.
