Climate change could be the final nail in the coffin for the already endangered giant panda.

A new report predicts between 80 and 100 percent of the species' natural habitat in China's Qinling Mountains will be wiped out in the coming decades.

"The pandas may face a shortage of food unless they can find alternative food resources," claims the study, published in journal Nature Climate Change.

Ninety-nine percent of a giant panda's diet is bamboo, each one eating up to 38kg a day.

Bamboo flowers only once every 30 to 35 years, meaning it is slow to adapt and could be wiped out relatively quickly in a changing climate.

"If there’s no bamboo, then pandas can’t survive," Jack Liu, an ecologist at Michigan State University in East Lansing told Discovery News.
