Paul Desmarais, who over the last half century built up and oversaw Canadian financial services giant Power Corp., died on Tuesday. He was 86.

One of Canada’s richest men, Power Corp.’s controlling shareholder and chairman of its executive committee maintained a net worth of $4.6 billion when he died. Power Corp., whose subsidiaries include mutual fund company Putnam Investments and insurance firm Great-Life Westco, had assets valued at more than $520 billion.

A shrewd businessman, Desmarais purchased his family’s one-route Ontario bus company for one dollar in 1951, before making a series of moves that involved him in the transportation and energy sectors. In 1968, he acquired control of Power Corp.?created originally as a hydroelectric company?and turned it into a diversified conglomerate that oversees insurance firms, mutual fund companies and a host of other businesses. Desmarais’ sons, André and Paul, Jr. serve as co-CEOs.

A close friend of Nicolas Sarkozy, he often housed the former French president at Le Domaine Laforest, Desmarais’ estate in Quebec’s Charlevoix region. He passed away there on Tuesday reportedly surrounded by “loved ones.”

He is survived by wife, Jacqueline; two sons; two daughters, Louise and Sophie, and 10 grandchildren.
