The chief executive of HTC has handed some operational duties to the company’s chairman and co-founder, as the beleaguered Taiwanese smartphone maker tries to claw its way back to prominence in the hyper-competitive mobile sector.

In what is being presented as a temporary move, Peter Chou, chief executive, is focusing on product development. Cher Wang, who has remained closely involved with HTC since co-founding the company in 1997, has stepped up her day-to-day duties to include sales, marketing and supplier relationships.

Once ranked in the global top five phonemakers by shipments, HTC this year fell out of the top 10, according to Gartner. Much like Nokia and BlackBerry, HTC found itself squeezed out of the market by an increasingly dominant Samsung and Apple, the only two brands that control more than 5 per cent of the smartphone market.

Mr Chou, who was appointed HTC’s chief executive in 2004, has come under heavy criticism in the past few months for his performance.

Most recently, HTC faced shortages of its flagship HTC One after this year’s launch.

HTC’s market share is 2.6 per cent globally, according to market researcher Canalys, down from a peak of 11.1 per cent two years ago. Its share price is down 55 per cent year to date.

Ms Wang, one of Taiwan’s best-known technology entrepreneurs, is now working six days at week at HTC, compared with two before assuming her enlarged role. Mr Chou promised “a good result next year”.
