President Barack Obama in a congratulatory phone call to new Chinese President Xi Jinping raised the issue of cybersecurity, a sign of the increasing focus on the matter in relations between the two countries.

　　In addition to discussing U.S. concerns about the North Korean nuclear threat, the White House said, Mr. Obama 'highlighted the importance of addressing cybersecurity threats,' which he cast as a 'shared challenge.' Mr. Obama framed cybersecurity in an economic context as the two countries address issues of trade, investment, and intellectual-property protections.

　　The White House didn't characterize Mr. Xi's response. China's state-run Xinhua news agency said Messrs. Xi and Obama exchanged views on the situation of the Korean Peninsula and cybersecurity among other issues, and that Mr. Xi 'expressed China's principles and positions on those issues.'

　　Mr. Obama's comments to Mr. Xi follow demands earlier this week by his national security adviser, Thomas Donilon, that China cease its backing of hacking to steal intellectual property from U.S companies and that it work with other countries to develop common rules of behavior in cyberspace.

　　Chinese officials deny that Beijing engaged in such activities. On Saturday, China's Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi called for cooperation on cybersecurity and said that China is a victim of cyberattacks. 'Cyberspace needs not war, but rules and cooperation,' he said. Mr. Yang said cyberspace shouldn't become a 'new battlefield.'

　　Mr. Xi was confirmed as state president Thursday at an annual meeting of China's National People's Congress, after taking over in November as head of the Communist Party and military.

　　China would like to work with the U.S. in enhancing mutual trust, expanding cooperation, handling differences, and maintaining high-level contacts, Mr. Xi told Mr. Obama, according to Xinhua.
