Investors are getting anxious in the bold but bumpy turnaround for struggling phone maker Nokia. The company’s shares fell 6% in Helsinki this morning after it reported a 4% fall in group handset sales from the first quarter to 53.7 units, slipping below forecasts for sales of 56.2 million.

Sales of Nokia’s Lumia smartphones increased 32% from the last quarter to 7.4 million euros, but that also undershot a Reuters poll of analysts expecting unit sales of 8.1 million.

The company’s net sales fell 3% quarter-on-quarter to 5.7 billion euros, down by 24% from last year. It posted an operating loss of 115 million euros, managing to narrow its deficit from an 824 million-euro loss in the first quarter of 2013.

Nokia is betting on big turnaround for its high-margin, smartphone business, which has struggled to compete against the dominant platforms of Apple ‘s iOS for the iPhone and Android, which has been popularised by Samsung with its Galaxy and Note range.

While Nokia’s smartphones have managed to grab 85.4% of the global market for Windows Phone, according to July 2013 statistics from AdDuplex, with its share of that market even growing slightly, the overall market share of Windows Phone in the United States fell to just 3% from 3.2% in the February to May 2013 quarter. Both Google ‘s Android platform (52.4%) and Apple’s iOS (39.2%) both gained.

One bright spot in Nokia’s report was the performance of its network infrastructure company Nokia Siemens Networks, whose operating margins came in at 11.8%, well above the 5% Nokia had been expecting. Compare this with margins at Nokia’s core handset division, where operating margins came in at negative 1.2%.

The networking division’s performance certainly vindicates Nokia’s recent purchase of Siemens’ 50% stake in the former joint venture. Nokia Chief Executive Stephen Elop said Nokia would be “strengthening Nokia Siemens Networks as a more independent entity, ” which could leave the door open to an eventual sale if the company needs the cash to provide more time for the turnaround of its handset division. Nokia’s net cash reserves fell to 4.1 billion euros, from 4.5 billion euros in the first quarter.

“Our mobile phones business unit started to demonstrate some signs of recovery in the latter part of the second quarter following a difficult start to the year, ” Elop said. “While we are very encouraged by the consumer response to our innovations in this price category, our Mobile Phones business unit is planning to take actions to focus its product offering and improve product competitiveness.”
