Standardized tests have exerted huge impact on college admission, causing quite a stir in the society. The SAT test, for example, has proved to be a valuable and reliable tool for evaluating applicants’ academic performance. However, a certain university claims that there are other effective means for assessment while objectivity of the SAT has eroded.

As far as I am concerned, those large-scale tests are effective as a placement test but more assessment means should be taken into account as well. On the one hand, research has clearly shown that the SAT test is not biased against any ethnic or racial group and those who excel in the test have exhibited the exceptional intelligence and have achieved the greatest college success. It is an objective means for universities to make decision about recruiting new students. On the other, a broad range of criteria should be considered: personal interviews, reflective essays, letter of recommendation, and a thorough examination of high school academic records. A university should not consider the candidates who attain the highest scores, but consider the candidates who best fit the school.

To sum up, the best way of college admissions is to rely on both standardized tests and other criteria at an appropriate proportion.
