Tom Cruise starrer "Oblivion" tops North America box office in weekend debut
LOS ANGELES, April 21 (Xinhua) -- "Oblivion," the latest action- hero incarnation of actor Tom Cruise, has opened in North America with an estimated 38.2 million U.S. dollar gate, finishing as the top grossing film over the weekend.
The post-apocalyptic thriller, directed by "Tron: Legacy" helmsman Joseph Kosinski which opened to wide release at 3,783 theaters in the United States and Canada, is on track for a debut which represented the largest opening weekend for Cruise since the 2006 actioner "Mission: Impossible III" (USD47.74 million). The Universal thriller also registered the fourth largest opening weekend since the start of this year.
However, the actor's first foray into science fiction in eight years received lukewarm reviews from audiences who assigned a "B-" CinemaScore to it. Exit polling showed that this film turned out to be a male-skewing piece, as 57 percent was male and 74 percent 25 years and older.
The baseball biopic "42" slipped to No. 2 for a 18 million dollar weekend. The Warner Bros. film is on track to gross 54.1 million dollars in two weeks. "The Croods," DreamWorks Animation's computer-generated animated film settled for third place for an estimated 9.5 million dollar business.
Rounding out the 10 most popular films in North America this weekend were "Scary Movie 5" (USD6.3 million), "G.I. Joe: Retaliation"(5.8 million), "The Place Beyond the Pines" (4.7 million), "Olympus has Fallen" (4.5 million), "Evil Dead" (4.1 million), "Jurassic Park 3-D" (4 million), and "Oz: The Great and Powerful" (3 million).
