Your friend is considering dropping out ofuniversity. What suggestion would you like to give him?

思路:

观点:he should not do that

Response:

Well, heshould not do that and there're possible solutions to every possibility hedropped out of school. Firstly, he may lack money for tuition. For this, hecould make a loan or take a part time job. Secondly, he may fail exams andcannot catch up with other students. For this, he can take training sessions after class. Moreover, he may loseinterest in college education and for this, he could be reminded of theimportance of certificates.

2

Which do you prefer? Card game or computer game?Explain why.

2. card game

Response:

For me, I prefercard games. Computer games are fine, but computers have already infiltrated ourlives so much. We work on them, write on them, watch shows on them, etc. It’salways good to just take a break from the computer and play a card game that hasnothing to do with computers. Even the feel of the deck of cards in your handsis such a welcome physical change from staring at a screen. Also, somethingabout cards is so classic. You can sit on your front porch, playing a game ofpoker as the sun sets in the distance, and really feel like someone could havebeen doing the exact same thing a hundred years ago. It’s a very cool sensationand makes card games even more fun.

I was almost 200 pounds last year andwhen I realized I had to lose weight, I started to play basketball. After ayear, I've lost over 70 pounds. What a nice hit! Moreover, it's a game to makefriends. Basketball, as is known to all, is a game requires a good sense of teamworkand cooperation. So it is the case with my partner Tim and me. We cooperatewell in the game, so we become friends. And the deeper the friendship is, thebetter we cooperate.

Do you agree or disagree with the statement that it’sa waste of time for students to take course outside their major field?

Response:

I believe so.There are some reasons. Firstly, most of our spare time has been filled withmountains of required courses and respective homework. In China, most studentshave to take at least 9 required courses for college entrance examination, letalone other optional courses necessary for high school graduation test. Thereis no gap for extra requirement. Besides, to succeed a living only means to beprominent in those classes related with the chosen career. Take my brother forexample. He would like to be a chemist in the future, and courses outside hismajor, like history and economy, are a waste of his time.

Moreover, outdoor activity takes moreparticipants and it's more likely to make friends. Basketball, as is known toall, is a game requires a good sense of teamwork and cooperation. So it is thecase with my partner Tim and me. We cooperate well in the game, so we becomefriends. And the deeper the friendship is, the better we cooperate.

Listening:

Response:

The university plans to offer daily necessities 24/7 and will give outsurveys to students to decide what items to be included. The male student inthe conversation agrees with this idea. First, stores with these items are faraway from the campus and close early at night. Last night, he wanted aspirinsfor headache but could not buy any nearby. Secondly, he thinks students’opinions are important and valuable because the school cannot know whatstudents really need in daily life. For example, the printer may be more likelyto run out of ink right before the deadline when an assignment is due.

Task 3

Listening:

Response:

According to the reading material, theuniversity plans to have the freshmen move to the baster dormitory beginningthe next year. Other students will move to other dormitories. The main reason isthat the freshmen can gather together and communicate when they encountersimilar problems. The man in the listening material supports the policy. First, when he was a freshman, he couldn't find anyone to discuss with when he hadtroubles. He thinks if freshmen can live together, these students will notsuffer what he did in the past. Also, after he moves to a new apartment, therewill be more room for him to store his stuff.

Task 3

Response:

The reading passage suggests theuniversity to build a new computer lab because the current one is too crowdedand there is enough space in the literature building for a new computer lab. Inthe conversation, the female student agrees with this proposal. First becauseshe usually has to wait in lines to do her homework on the computer. Second, students majoring in literature often need to write their papers on computers. It will be convenient for them to have the new computer lab in the literaturebuilding.

Task 3

Response:

In the reading passage, the universitydecided to increase the number of students in each class from 8 to 15. That’sbecause there are more students applying for these classes while the number of facultiesis limited. In the listening, the male student disagrees with this decision.First, it will decrease the opportunity to communicate with the faculty, leading to less participation. Second, if more students are coming, moretuition will be paid. The university can use this to pay for having morefaculties. In this way, the problem of faculty insufficiency will be solved.

Task 4

Reading:functional attribute error,

Listening:

Response:

Functional attribute error describes apsychological phenomenon that people tend to ignore the details seeminglyirrelevant to them. The professor talked about his own experience as anexample. Once he was later for a meeting where his supervisor also attended. After he arrived, he apologized to the supervisor for his lateness. Later, hehad to propose to his supervisor about a question. In fact, the supervisor hadexplained the question before he arrived, but the professor had no idea ofthis. However, the supervisor apparently had forgot the professor’s latenessand was angry that he had asked the question having been explained ahead oftime.

Task 4

Reading:Echolocation: detect objects or position through the refection of sound.

Response:

Echolocation refers to the concept thatsome animals can detect positions or objects through the reflection of soundwithout eyesight. The professor gives an example of bat. Mouse is the main foodto feed bats, but mouse is only active at night. The view is terrible at night. However, it is not difficult for bats. They can use echolocation to detect theexact position of mouse. They can also detect barriers to avoid crashing onbarriers such as trees. Besides, bats can also have the ability to distinguishthe actual target from trees to mouse. That’s the echolocation helps somespecies to detect targets without seeing them actually.

Task 4

What do you think others will response?

Response:

False consensus refers to apsychological phenomenon that people tend to believe that they are right or atleast stand by the most common idea. The professor gives an experiment. Theparticipants were questioned about their behaviors in the library. For example, whether they will speak, sit or stand in the library. Some think it is awkwardto speak in the library. But at the second time, the participants were askedwhether they believed that others would hold the same opinion as they did. Thistime, however, most people did not think others would hold the same opinion asthey did.

Task 520150613

Problem:

Solution 1:

Solution 2:

Response:

In the conversation, the woman hasencountered a problem that her painting work was left at her parents’ place, but she has to turn it in tomorrow night. There are two possible solutions.Firstly, she can drive back to her parents’ house to pick it up. The secondsolution is to draw another one. I would suggest her to take the first one, becausethe time it takes for her to drive back and forth may be similar to which ittakes her to draw another. The only cost will be the gas. Also, she has beenconcentrated on the original work and really likes it, so she’d better to turnthe original one in.

14

Response:

The speaker has encountered a problem. He won a prize for his outstandingpaper and got a chance to have dinner with the university president, but he hasa difficult time deciding what to wear. There are two solutions. Firstly, hecan wear a suit. This is the most proper wear for this formal occasion, but hedoesn't won one and there’s not enough time for him to buy one. Secondly, hecan wear casual clothes, but he’s not sure whether it’s formal enough. Comparedwith these two solutions, the first is better, he can borrow one from one ofhis friends, and in the long run, he should buy one because he will need it forformal events like meetings and job interviews.

15

Solutions

Response:

The male in the conversation hasencountered a problem that his electrical keyboard was destroyed in a storm, but there will be a concert performance next week. There are two options. Oneis to buy a used keyboard. Second, he can cancel his trip with his friends anduse the money saved up for this trip to buy a new one. Personally speaking, Irecommend him to take the former solution. A used keyboard doesn't necessarilyhave poor quality. He can carefully pick one to make sure it has a highquality. By doing this, he will be able to make the performance and go to thetrip with his friends.

Task 6

Response:

Contemporary people tend to move frombig cities to smaller ones. There are two advantages for this trend. Firstly,it introduces the most advanced concepts to less developed cities. Take hisfriend for example. He used to live in New York and considered the bus servicethere complete and awesome. Therefore, after moving back to his hometown, hesuggested the local area improve the bus service. Secondly, it promotes theeconomy and development in smaller cities. His friend found the houses in thelocal area were nice and cheap, so he told this to his acquaintance in NewYork, and they came to buy houses in the area.

Task6

Listening:

Response:

As stated in the lecture, beingpessimistic sometimes is beneficial. Two advantages are mentioned by theprofessor. First, people being pessimistic are used to prepare beforehand. Forinstance, if the person is pessimistic about the weather, thinking that it maybe raining the next day, so the person will bring an umbrella or rain coat withhim. Second, people being pessimistic tend not to get too disappointed whensomething bad happens since they already foresee the bad result that may takeplace. For example, if an individual is looking for a job and he is pessimisticabout it. When he cannot find a good one, he will not be too depressed.

18

Response:

The professor in the lecture has discussed two risks of price discounting.First of all, it will prevent the customers from buying products with standardprice. The professors talked about an example of a furniture company. Therewould be an annual discount season of the company in December, when almost allthe products were on sale. Gradually, the company realized that customers didnot buy their products until the discount season. The second threat is themisunderstanding of customers that products on sale are of worse quality. Takea vehicle company for example, although the original purpose of the discount wasto promote a new brand of cars, customers thought the new car has some problemswith spare parts and were thus with extra discount.
