　　54. regardless of, in defiance of, in spite of, irrespective of, without regard to，without respect to 这些介词都有 “不管” 的意思。regardless of 和irrespective of 可用于主语是人或实际行为者是人的句子中，表明其主观态度,意思是“不考虑……而”，常接cost，consequence，expense 等词，表示 “置……后果不顾” 的意思。另外，irrespective of还可用于陈述事实的句子中而不表明谁的主观态度。试比较：

　　(1) John would see them through, regardless of/irrespective of expense.

　　(2) Today these expressions are often used regardless of/ irrespective of the rules.

　　(3 ) Schools are open to all irrespective of race, colour or creed.

　　(4 ) Everyone is bound by law irrespective of social status.

　　句(1) 、(2) 中由regardless of 或irrespective of 引起的短语都是表明人的主观态度。句(1) 表示约翰不考虑要付出的代价，句(2) 表示人们置规则于不顾，两者可以替换，转义成“不管”。句(3)“不分种族、肤色或信仰，学校大门向所有人敞开”及句(4) “所有人不论社会地位高低都应受法律约束” ，irrespective of 短语并不表明schools 或all，everyone或law 的主观态度，irrespective of 不能用regardless of 替换。

　　in spite of 由 “虽然、尽管” 的让步概念转义成“不管”，in defiance of 由 “蔑视、无视” 转义成“不顾”，意见较具体。

　　试比较：

　　(5) He dived to the rescue in defiance of the icy water.

　　(6) He dived to the rescue in spite of the icy water.

　　(7) He dived to the rescue , regardless of his own safely.

　　句(5 ) 用in defiance of 有 “他跳下水救人，不惧冰冷的水” 的意思。句(6) 用in spite of 含有 “他跳下水救人，虽然水很冷” 的让步概念。句(7) “他跳下水救人，不考虑自己安全” 则没有让步概念，regardless of 不用in spite of替换。without regard to 和without respect to 分别与regardless of 和irrespective of 同义，较少使用。
