The Mushroom
Emily Dickinson
The mushroom is the elf of plants,
At evening it is not;
At morning in a truffled hut
It stops upon a spot
As if it tarried always;
And yet its whole career
Is shorter than a snake’s delay,
And fleeter than a tare.
‘T is vegetation’s juggler,
The germ of alibi;
Doth like a bubble antedate,
And like a bubble hie.
I feel as if the grass were pleased
To have it intermit;
The surreptitious scion
Of summer’s circumspect.
Had nature any outcast face,
Could she a son contemn,
Had nature an Iscariot,
That mushroom, ―it is him.

蕈是植物之中的精灵。
到黄昏它已不见;
晨间它撑着麦菌的小屋，
停步于一个地点，
恍若它经常如此淹留;
但是它生命的全部
却短于一条蛇的逡巡，
比莠豆还要急促。
它是植物中间的魔术家，
置身局外的稚子;
像一闪泡沫般抢先来临，
又如泡沫般疾逝。
我感觉丛草像欣然乐于
让它作片时的憩足;
盛夏这一位私生的小孩
会留心前瞻后顾。
若自然也有张被弃的脸，
若它也贱视小娃，
若自然也有狡黠的犹大，
那野蕈，那就是它
