Manas epic
Manas epic, as one of the three major epics of China, is the poem of the Kirgiz ethnic minority in China. The epic began its initial phase in the 10th century, and developed in the 13th century. The grand poem, with eight chapters, and a length of over 230,000 lines, has been spread and sung by the Kirgiz in China and the neighboring Central Asian countries for over a thousand years. As popular literature that passed down from generation to generation, Manas is not only an outstanding artistic creation, but also a reflection of the Kirgiz history. In fact, it is an oral encyclopedia of the Kirgiz, which records their history, culture, living customs and traditions, religious beliefs, social and economic lives, family and marriage, music and the fine arts, as well as languages, among others. In September 2009, Manas epic tradition was successfully classified in the Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in September 2009.
